New Name, New Host and New Protocol!

  • April 9, 2014

It's been a quiet month photography-wise but  busy in all things tech. I've just re-launched my site with a new top level domain - (drum roll) - gavowen.photography! I always thought that .com was too "corporatey" for my photography site. When my good friend and shooting buddy Luke gave me the heads up about the new generic top level domains (gTLDs) for creatives, I jumped in and secured mine, with a bunch of other .photography sites that I could perhaps use in the future (I did get a bit carried away!) I've gone with a brand new host - VentraIP.  I have to say - the team at VIP are absolutely...

White Night Melbourne 2014

  • February 25, 2014

White Night is an arts festival held annually in Melbourne over Summer from 7pm until 7am. Being held primarily during the hours of darkness, a major attraction is artwork based on illuminations and projections. This year it fell on Saturday the 22nd of February, flowing into Sunday morning. You can still see the events guide (for the time being) on their website. I say "every year", giving this the gravity of some sort of tradition, when in actual fact it only had its inaugural run last year. Speaking of last year, I was out all night (just like this year), and was continually blown away...

Melbourne Zombie Shuffle 2013

  • October 12, 2013

It was a fun Melbourne Zombie Shuffle for 2013 - thoroughly enjoyed it, even if I did dehydrate quite a bit from the 25 degree day wearing a black T-shirt and with no water bottle. Next time I'll be a bit wiser! I handed out my Moo cards to some people and this is for you guys. OK so I've got my favourite zombie shots here on Flickr: I've dumped everything on G+, as I like the way it gives you a wall of photos: My shots from today - 142 photos My shots from last year - 240 photos My shots from 2011 - 311 photos I seem to be dropping right off. OK next year I'm going to get there...

Photoshop CS6: Time to Update the Digital Darkroom

  • March 14, 2013

There was a time I used to upgrade my PC regularly. As a former gamer I used to try out all the latest games, and when my PC struggled to keep up with a decent 60+ FPS frame rate in the most demanding of games (24-bit colour and 1024x768px resolution), I would feel the need to upgrade the trio of components - motherboard, CPU and RAM. This was a fairly costly exercise to maintain! After my last big upgrade in about 2009, I found that my PC was fine for all current tasks, as I was only was playing games on the PS3 every so often, and nothing was severely taxing my system, until I got into high-end...

Misadventures in Tripod-Land

  • June 17, 2012

I just read a great article about how as photographers, we progress through different stages of gear buying when it comes to camera supports - tripod legs and heads. I was amazed at just how accurate the article is, which is why it's referenced in may places on the web. I thought I'd talk about my own experiences in this area.   My First tripod after getting back into photography in 2009 was this Slik 713CF carbon fibre tripod plus SH-705E pan head. I paid $343 for the combination, which I thought was pretty premium at the time! I remembered thinking that carbon fibre is carbon fibre,...
